The toilet is one of the most important appliances in working order within your property. If it does not work, there could be multiple concerns that arise due to them being inoperable. Thankfully, some of the most common issues, such as a broken flush, can be taken care of easily by a plumber.
If you have DIY expertise, you can also do the repairs by yourself. Here is a guide on how to fix the toilet flush in six easy steps:
1. Gather repair supplies
You will have to ensure that you acquire the right tools for any repair job. These supplies and materials could be used in various capacities, but all may not be required. However, you are always better safe than sorry. To begin with, make sure you obtain some cleaning solution.
These solutions could be homemade or bought at your local department store. Other tools to get your hands on could involve a toilet auger, a new adjustable flapper, or a toilet bowl chain. Regardless of what you use, you should have most of these tools in your inventory and be ready to use them.
2. Toilet feed and jet holes
There are various fixes to try and experiment with when it comes to incomplete toilet flushes. Sometimes, the issue could be much more obvious than meets the eye. At other times, there could be a deeper problem at play. The jet holes and the rim feed holes in your toilet could be the source that requires attention.
First and foremost, you will want to turn off your water supply valve and let the waterfall out of the tank. Once it is drained, use the drill you acquired and feed it into the rim feed holes. Sometimes, there could be deposits in and around these areas, which could prevent successful flushes!
3. Low water levels in toilet
As mentioned previously, some problems inside your toilet could be much simpler to resolve. Take a look at the tank inside your toilet, which will indicate what an adequate water level will be. If the water happens to be at least one inch below the top of the overflow pipe, an issue could be present.
Make sure that you adjust the necessary by looking at the adjustment screw on the fill valve. The height of the fill valve itself could also be adjusted accordingly so that the resulting water level will rise. You do not have to go out of your way all the time to find a proper fix!
4. Toilet flush valve
The center of the toilet’s tank should also be inspected and reviewed accordingly. That is because your incomplete flushes could have to do with the flush valve. Sometimes, there could be buildup in and around the valve, which can be cleaned up simply.
At other times, you will have to replace the flush valve entirely. If this is the case, make sure that you detach the valve from the bottom position in the tank. Then, replace it with a newer model, and turn the water supply valve back on. All should be well now, with the resulting flushes.
5. Adjacent toilet problems
Sometimes, the source of your incomplete toilet flushes could result from other adjacent issues. A running toilet, for example, is one of the most major issues to experience with your toilet. Flushes will not have the ability to occur sufficiently if this is the case with your toilet’s condition.
Should you attempt to fix a running toilet yourself, look at the flapper inside of the toilet’s tank. In some cases, the flapper’s position may be awkward. Or the water level in the tank is much too high. Either way, these fixes can be solved with little effort on your end.
6. Solve other toilet issues
If your toilet happens to have a loose handle, you may be experiencing incomplete flushes. If it becomes disconnected from the rest of the tank, it may need to be connected again. Or, you may need to replace the handle with a newer model.
Your toilet may have to be inspected further for all other issues that cannot be solved easily. Calling in a professional, such as a plumber, can alleviate all worries that you are facing. It may cost a bit more, but it is very much a necessary move to fix the flushing!
